Posted by thecarguy in Jun, 2021
Car modification has always been popular for any car super fans but in recent years it has started to reach the mainstream more and is growing in popularity. Back in the day, people thought that the main reason for car modification was just for aesthetic purposes, cars are made a certain way so they appeal to the most people as possible. However, design preference is very personal to each individual so people would get their cars modified to look exactly how they want them to. When people thought this was the only reason there was not widespread interest in car modification as they were still functional but there are other reasons for car modification including to improve performance. Most car manufacturers will be thinking heavily about fuel economy when designing a car, but if you care more about performance than mileage you can have your car modified to reflect this. Other reasons include if you need a car for a specific purpose and only for that purpose, you’ll be able to have the car modified to make it perfect for that reason and often car modification helps to extend the life of a car. If you’re wanting to get started then we’ve found the most important things to do so.
Get the right tools
Cars are quite large so this means that when you’re starting out you need to make sure you have a suitable workspace that is big enough if you have a garage that you can empty out then you could make this into your new workspace. Car modification is a very technical thing so there are many tools that you’ll need to purchase before you start, we’ve found which ones are the most important for a newbie as they’re used most commonly. Firstly, you should consider where your plug sockets are and where you will be working, if you don’t have enough plug sockets then you should be considering wireless tools like my ryobi cordless sander as this will allow you to complete your work without the lack of sockets being a hindrance. The absolute necessities when it comes to car modification include pliers, a torque wrench, a wrench set, screwdrivers, car ramps, and jack stands. For more complex modifications you’ll likely need more tools but for just starting out these are the key tools that you’ll need.
Stay safe
Whilst the law allows a lot of freedom when it comes to modifying cars, there are some important things to be aware of that you shouldn’t do when modifying your car. The first is the most important, you should never use parts that have not been approved by your manufacturer, whilst it might save you some money it can be dangerous as it won’t have passed as many performance and safety tests as a part of your manufacturer. Even though the savings can sometimes be significant it isn’t worth putting yourself and others on the road in danger. To stay out of trouble with the police there are a few more rules that you must follow. Headlights on cars must be white or yellow, if you’re wanting to add green headlights to make your car stand out more, don’t do this as it is illegal. You also cannot hide or alter your number plate when modifying your car as this can also get you in trouble with the police. Modifying your car can be fun and once it’s finished something you can be proud of, just make sure you follow the rules too.
